Tips On How to Reduce Household Costs

Be honest about your habits and needs.  Be really critical of your spending habits.  Even if you wind up cutting only one or two items from your budget, you've at least started to take control of your finances.  The next time you sit down to examine your budget, you might be able to pare things down even more.

Cut Back on Extras

Examine your phone bills carefully as you will be surprised how much you spend in monthly line rentals and unnecessary calls. How about the premium cable or satellite package that you subscribe to?

Shopping Coupons

There are numerous savings to gain from shopping coupons which offer discounts.  The key is not to simply purchase a product that you otherwise would not purchase just because of the “savings” you can make.  Exercising discretion is the key.

Get Energy Smart

  • Reducing energy use and greenhouse gas emissions is good for your household budget and good for the environment. There are many practical ideas that are easy to implement and have an immediate impact on your wallet and the environment:
  • Cutting hot water usage by installing a 3 star rated showerhead, taking shorter showers.
  • Gas is generally cheaper and less damaging to the environment than electricity. If you use electricity to cook, use the microwave where practical. Fill the kettle with the minimum amount of water needed.
  • Fridges and freezers need space at the top, back and sides to shed excess heat.  For appliances with exposed rear coils, vacuum or wipe off dust. Ensure door seals are kept clean and seal well. Locate fridges and freezers in cool spots.  Regularly remove any frost build-up.
  • When sunlight enters a room it delivers an enormous amount of heat. It’s like having a two bar radiator hanging on the wall. An external blind or pergola will keep out the sun in summer..
  • Appliances on standby consume up to 10% of your electricity bill. Turn them off at the wall when not in use.
  • Although florescent light bulbs cost more up-front, you will actually save money through the energy saved and extended life of the bulb
  • Turn off lights when they aren't in use
  • Wash your laundry in cold water.
  • Turn down the temperature on your hot water heater;

Seek Cheaper Entertainment

You don't have to spend a lot of money to have fun.  Rent movies instead of seeing them in the theatre.  Enjoy free concerts instead of paid concerts.  Check out books at the library instead of buying them.  Go on a picnic or share dinners with friends at each others homes instead of eating out at restaurants.

Pay Your Bills on Time

By paying bills late, you are likely attracting late fees.   These add up.

Eat at home more

  • When tracking your spending, you will see how many times you are eating out each month. Try to treat yourself only once a week.
  • Make your lunch or take leftovers to work. When cooking your evening meal, cook extra and freeze it, for your lunches.
  • Pack a picnic dinner and take the family out for an early dinner, evening stroll and/or play in the park.

Spend a day cooking

Most of us come home from work exhausted and are in no mood to cook. Going out, even to fast-food restaurants, can break any budget quickly. Instead, set aside one day to cook and do lots of it.
